Nepal - Missing: The Right To Know
The families have the right to know the fate of their disappeared loved ones.

The recent armed conflict in Nepal has left a painful and tragic legacy. Apart from the physical suffering and devastation endured by the country, hundreds of families are still anxiously awaiting news of their missing relatives.

Under international humanitarian law, each party to the conflict must take all feasible measures to account for persons reported missing as a result of the violence. The parties must also honour the right of families to know the fate of their loved ones by providing them with any information they may have on them.

To date, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has collected more than 2,400 names of persons who have disappeared. It has regularly submitted these names to the parties to the conflict and reminded them of their obligation to do everything possible to find out what has happened to these people. Although the fate of hundreds has already been established on the basis of replies to these submissions and information collected directly by the ICRC, more than 800 people remain unaccounted for.

The Red Cross is firmly committed to pursuing its efforts on behalf of the families and helping to alleviate their plight. To that end, the ICRC is publishing the names of those still missing in the hope of gathering further information on their whereabouts from the public.
